How To Tell If You Need a Graphics Card (GPU)

“Do I need a graphics processor?” The answer is yes. All computers have graphics cards whether they are integrated into the CPU, a separate GPU chip, or a dedicated card that is plugged into the motherboard. When most people think of graphics cards they think of the latter. When you hear someone say “I bought a new video card for my computer” or “I need a new graphics card to play Uncharted 8“, they’re talking about a dedicated GPU. The biggest benefit of a dedicated GPU is performance. Not only does a dedicated graphics card have a sophisticated computer chip designed explicitly for the task of processing video, the GPU, but it also has dedicated RAM for the task (which is typically faster and better optimized for…

Are Macbooks Worth the Extra Cost?

This virtually always comes down to which criteria you want to use to evaluate the decision. Apple loses on: High Performance Hardware (they just don’t build at the high end.) Highly customized solutions (don’t ask Apple for a laptop with 32GB or RAM or a workstation GPU… or lots of other customization options.) Apple frequently (but not always) loses on Hardware for the $$. If you like to break things down to component pricing, Apple frequently loses here. Budget solutions. Apple doesn’t compete below a certain price point in the market. Apple breaks even on: Product longevity. Studies have shown that Apple hardware fails at a rate comparable to several other mass market OEMs and as a tech product goes, they generate about as many…

What on Earth is a Chromebook?

Chromebooks are laptops that run the Google Chrome operating system and come in many different shapes, sizes, and price points, but they all share a few common characteristics. Most noticeably, they start up fast, have built-in virus protection, automatically update their software, and are generally inexpensive. For these reasons, Chromebooks have becoming increasingly popular with casual Internet users — people who just want to surf the Web — and in the education field. It’s interesting that Chromebooks are taking on Macs, because when the system was revealed, experts had Google gunning for Microsoft and the popular, inexpensive ultrabooks and netbooks of that day. But with Windows 10 shifting Microsoft’s strategy towards hybrid tablet-turned-computers, an opportunity opened up for Google in low-cost laptops. And manufacturers followed. That’s why…

Three Ways to Backup Your PC

Backing up files and photos isn’t hard, but with several different ways to go about it, it can be confusing to get started. This guide gives you the basics on the various choices you have to back up your files and the tips to make it easy. Multiple backups: Why they’re important Before diving into the ways to back up your files, I want to talk about multiple backups. The best way to ensure that you do not lose important documents and photos is to not rely solely on one backup method. Make sure to store copies of files and photos on your computer and in two or more of the methods listed below. You can even keep copies on a secondary computer, if available….

Easy Techniques to Avoid Caching a Computer Virus

Beware of Fake Download Buttons These can turn up anywhere, but generally you’ll find them on download sites. Whether legitimate or otherwise, you can guarantee there will be a download button that isn’t the one you want to click. The result can be that you downloaded something you don’t want — possibly malware, although often simply bad software.  Use a Secure Browser An old copy of internet Explorer is just not good enough these days. Come to think of it, an old version of any browser cannot be considered secure. These apps are updated regularly by their developers for many reasons, mostly to maintain and improve security. Online shopping, online banking, social networking — they all have their risks, and the last thing you want…

Best Free Software For Image and Photo Editing

1. GIMP The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) remains our Editors’ Choice for free image editing for good reason. It has all the high-end tools you could want for playing with graphics, and naturally costs a lot less than Photoshop; 100 percent less, in fact. 2. Paint.net Is Paint.net a perfect replacement for Photoshop? Nothing is as powerful, but at this price—utterly free—it is pretty close. For any minor (and some major) picture manipulation, it’s fast, comprehensive, and easy to use. It requires that Windows .NET be installed to work but that’s done automatically if you don’t already have it. 3. Inkscape Vector graphics illustration tools typically cost a lot but not Inkscape. You’ll be designing, drawing, and shaping gorgeous SVG formatted files in no…

DeeDoc Trade Secrets: How to Reinstall Windows 8

A clean install of Windows is the way to go when all other software troubleshooting has been unsuccessful and you want to install or reinstall a “clean” copy of Windows back on your computer. A clean install will return your computer to pretty much the same state as the day you purchased it. A clean install should be reserved for the most serious of Windows operating system problems since all the data on your primary hard drive partition is destroyed in the process. ALL DATA on your PC will be erased so you must backup anything you wish to save before you begin the clean install process. Gather the original installation discs and downloaded program setups to any program you wish to put back on your computer….

Toshiba Expands Recall of Battery Packs Due to Fire Hazards

Toshiba America’s expanded recall involves Panasonic lithium-ion battery packs installed in 41 models of Toshiba Satellite laptops. This is an extension of previous recall in March 2016 where about 91,000 units were recalled. The battery packs also were sold separately and installed by Toshiba as part of a repair. Battery packs included in this recall have part numbers that begin with G71C and these part numbers can be found on the battery pack itself.   Toshiba has received five reports of the battery pack overheating and melting, including one additional report since the first recall announcement. And although no injuries have been reported, customers should immediately go to the Toshiba’s website and click on the battery pack utility link in the first shadowed box on the page.   Customers can also…
